Lazy Saturday

I've spent a lazy Saturday mostly watching reruns of the original Star Trek and the second Season of House on DVD.

These shows tend to have more dissimilarities than similarities. Part of it comes from the fact that were made in different eras. In the 1960's we wanted to see an optimistic future where the heroes are willing to die for each other. In the 21st century, we consider that unrealistic and are fascinated with the worst in human nature.

Can't we have a show that mixes optimism and realism? People tend to believe a lie more if it's horrible enough. Realistic optimism often comes across as sappy which implies a lie.

Both shows tend to work for the same reason though. They both focus on good story telling first.
